William Atkinson, shorten to Adkins, married on 17 Jan 1716, Elizabeth Parker, daughter of Richard and Mitha Parker. The marriage is recorded at St. John’s Church, Richmond, Henrico County, Virginia.

The records show they had 8 children:

Richard, b ca 1717, Henrico Co.

Parker, b ca 1720, Henrico Co.

William, Jr., b ca 1721, Henrico Co.

Jacob, b ca 1725, Henrico Co.

Sherwood, b ca 1728, Goochland Co.

Henry, b ca 1730, Goochland Co.

Mary, b ca 1735, Goochland Co.

Joseph

There are other records in Henrico, Goochland, Lunenburg and Halifax counties.

It is not known to who Mary married or even if she married, however she bore and raised six children. Family oral tradition is that Mary lived common law with a descendant of the Earl of Oxford. It further states that he deserted her during or just prior to the Revolutionary War and returned to England.

Mary’s children were:

David, b. ca 1754, Lunenburg Co.

Mark, b. ca 1756, Halifax Co.

John ?

Christine, b ca 1759, Halifax Co.

Jacob, b ca 1761, Halifax Co.

Sherrod, b 2 March 1765, Halifax Co.

Nancy, b 1767, Pittsylvania Co.

The above come from a published book by Ronnie Adkins entitled Adkins, Land of York, Surrey County, England to Beech Fork, Wayne County, West Virginia.

Written record of Steve Burch, grandson of John Dillard Atkisson and son of Sarah Elizabeth (Atkisson) Burch.:

My mother's father, John Dillard Atkisson, was born in Patrick Co., VA on April 13, 1803. My mother's mother was Elizabeth McKain, born in Hart Co., KY, Oct 06, 1806. They were married in Floyd Co., Indiana, near New Albany in February 1834. John Dillard was one of 5 brothers:Jesse, the oldest removed with his parents from VA to Georgia and in 1850 when his parents were dead was authorized by power of attorney from his other brothers and sisters to administer and settle their estate. My grandfather (John D., Sr.) received $47. as his share of the inheritance after final settlement of his parents' estate. My mother well remembers when her father got it by mail from Georgia. The other brothers of John Dillard besides Jesse were William, Joe and Steve. John D. and William, probably sometime between 1825-30, had under employment by the U. S. Government accompanied a large bunch of Indians, removing them from VA to Indian Territory and on this expedition, they went far up the Red River with their charges, probably to southern Oklahoma. Returning to VA, the family split up, parents and Jesse to Georgia; William, John D., Joe and Steve coming down the Ohio River - all our direct ancestors came that route, even to Elizabeth McKain, our Grandmother, born in Kentucky Oct 6, 1806. Well, John D. and Joe remained around New Albany for some years, at least that was my grandfather's headquarters for he became a Mississippi River steamboatman, running from Louisville and Cincinnati to New Orleans and on the night of the greatest meteoric display on record in the U. S., known as the night of falling stars, Nov 13, 1833, from 2 to 4 a.m. he was heaving the lead between Natchez and Memphis. Mother said she had frequently heard him tell how crazy the Negro deck hands and white roustabouts were sprawling on the deck while Grandfather calmly went on sounding the river for depth of channel and calling his findings to the captain, but he said it was a wonderful and awe inspiring spectacle. Steve Atkisson went up the Cumberland River into Tennessee and settled there or perhaps it was the Tennessee River. William Atkisson went to Washington Co., N.W. Arkansas, and remained. His descendants are there yet. Well, what about Elizabeth McKain, that Irish ancestress that gave the sparkle and wit to Aunt Gabriella and whatever became of the same our descendants are there yet. Her mother's name was Sarah King and her grandmother's name was Delaney, Irish also, who had married a full-fledged German named King. All from Patrick Co., VA and Guilford Co., NC. Mother and father could not remember any of the dates but were sure as to names and facts. Aunt Gustine, whom I never saw, but to whom Cousin Jimmy, Uncle John's only boy, went when he ran away from Uncle Jim's, after his father's death. They were living in Illinois. She married Ben Gilmour. Grandfather Atkisson married down at New Albany, moved up to Greene Co. and mother was born there. Times got hard and they moved back to New Albany where grandfather worked in a steamboat boiler factory and mother worked at a tavern there till she was ?,when they moved north again. Grandfather died near Bloomington, Indiana in 1863 of chronic liver trouble.
